Koh Mak is the biggest privately owned island in
Thailand and since 20 year there are accommodations
built for travellers and tourists. Still the island
is a quiet and relaxed place with enough facilities
to have a very nice stay.
Although the island is still largely unspoilt, it
has a very good infrastructure. You can discover
it by motorbike or for the adventurers you can
rent a mountain bike.
On the island there are very good signposted tracks that
lead you through the jungle, along coconut plantages, towards a
deserted beach and back to a cocktailbar.
Because the island is not so big you can also walk around to
the most beautiful places.
Besides the activities on land you can try diving, snorkelling, windsurfing and
so on. There are several diving schools where you can
make day trips to the most beautiful coral
reefs nearby, like Koh Klang.
But of course one of the best things to enjoy the island
is to relax, read a book, take a sunbath and enjoy the
Thai cuisine with a Singha beer.
On the island is a 24 hour electricity supply and a
mobile phone network. Several places have internet access.
Be aware that the island doesn't have an ATM so take enough
money with you. In
high season you can take the speedboat to Koh Chang to pick up some money. It will take a few
hours and costs about 900 BT. The slow boat is a lot cheaper but then you will have to stay
the night in Koh Chang.
Koh Mak is an ideal destination
for all travellers who desire beautiful and tropical
surroundings unspoiled by mass tourism.
